The World Professional Association for Transgender Health recently published the new Standards of Care (SOC8) for the treatment of transgender and gender diverse people. Given the global concern regarding gender affirming care, especially for youth, the SOC8 guidelines for working with non-binary and eunuch individuals are important new additions to the current Standards of Care. Overall in the latest standards, there are some significant changes from previous versions that mental health providers who work with nonbinary and eunuch individuals and their families need to be aware of. As underserved and often misunderstood communities, the nonbinary and eunuch chapters are welcome new additions. This webinar will help providers understand how the SOC8 addresses the treatment and assessment of nonbinary and eunuch individuals. These new standards may significantly change how we practice and especially what is expected of us as mental health providers when evaluating nonbinary and eunuch individuals for gender affirming medical care. If you work with nonbinary or eunuch people of any age or their families it is important to understand these guidelines and how they may impact your work.

We’re going to talk about…

  • SOC8 expectations for mental health providers working with nonbinary & eunuch individuals and their families.
  • Guidelines for approaching work with nonbinary children, youth, adults and their families
  • Guidelines for approaching work with eunuch individuals
  • Guidelines for the assessment of nonbinary & eunuch individuals seeking gender affirming care
  • Case examples

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe what constitutes nonbinary and eunuch gender identities in the SOC8
  • Describe the person centered approach to gender affirming care and assessment with clients whose gender is beyond the binary.
  • Explain the experience of a eunuch person and how that differs from a male who has experienced castration
  • Explain what constitutes clinical complexity with a nonbinary or eunuch individual that would lead to a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment

Why this is important?

This Webinar will help mental health providers who work with nonbinary or eunuch people across the life span navigate the latest changes in the WPATH Standards of Care, version 8 and know how to implement them in your practice and evaluations with these populations. It will also help any provider managing complex cases understand when a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment is called for and when it’s not.

The overall goal of the Standards of Care guidelines is to provide clinical guidance for health professionals to assist transgender and gender diverse people with safe and effective pathways to achieve lasting personal comfort with their gendered selves, and to maximize their overall health, psychological well-being, and self-fulfillment.

Version 8 of the standards of care is a broad expansion of the guidelines, since quite a lot has changed in the world of gender affirming care in the past 11 years since SOC7 was unveiled. For mental health providers who work with nonbinary or eunuch people and their families, especially those who are evaluating them for social transition and gender affirming care, it is important to understand the latest guidelines.
