The World Professional Association for Transgender Health recently published the new Standards of Care (SOC8) for the treatment of transgender, gender diverse individuals, including those with physical intersexuality. Intersex conditions are often misunderstood and mistreated in young children, creating a similar experience of dysphoria for some. The SOC8 guidelines provide crucial insights and recommendations for healthcare providers working with intersex people who have authentic embodiment goals that require medical interventions. These guidelines are particularly important given the unique medical and psychological needs of intersex individuals. The latest standards introduce significant changes from previous versions that healthcare providers, especially those working in mental health, need to be aware of.

In this webinar, we will delve into how SOC8 addresses the treatment and assessment of intersex individuals who are experiencing gender incongruence. These new standards may significantly alter clinical practices and set new expectations for healthcare providers, particularly in the evaluation of intersex individuals for appropriate medical care. Understanding these guidelines is crucial for anyone working with intersex individuals of any age or their families.

What we will Cover:

  • What intersex conditions are and the impact of gender incongruence for intersex people.
  • SOC8 expectations for healthcare providers working with intersex individuals and their families.
  • Guidelines for approaching work with intersex individuals across different age groups.
  • The assessment process for intersex individuals across the lifespan seeking appropriate medical care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe intersexuality as defined in the SOC8.
  • Explain the person-centered approach to care and assessment for intersex clients.
  • Identify the unique medical and psychological aspects of intersex conditions, gender incongruence, and timing of medical interventions.
  • Describe the gender affirming approach to care and assessments for intersex people.

Why this is important?

This webinar will equip mental health and healthcare providers with the knowledge to navigate the latest changes in the WPATH Standards of Care, version 8, particularly as they apply to intersex individuals. It will guide providers in implementing these guidelines in their practice and evaluations. Additionally, it will aid in managing complex cases and determining when a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment is required.

The overall goal of the Standards of Care guidelines is to provide clinical guidance for health professionals to assist transgender, gender diverse, and intersex people in finding safe and effective pathways to achieve personal comfort with their gendered selves, and to maximize their overall health, psychological well-being, and self-fulfillment.

Version 8 of the standards of care represents a significant expansion of the guidelines, reflecting the advancements in understanding and care for intersex individuals since the release of SOC7. For healthcare providers working with intersex individuals and their families, especially those evaluating them for appropriate medical care, understanding these latest guidelines is essential.
