The World Professional Association for Transgender Health recently published the new Standards of Care (SoC8) for the treatment of transgender and gender diverse people. Given the global concern regarding gender affirming care for youth, the SoC8 guidelines for working with adolescents and their families is likely one of the most hotly debated chapters in the current Standards of Care. There are some significant changes from previous versions that health care providers who work with youth need to be aware of and it is imperative that you understand these and know how to approach the new requirements that are in some cases ambiguous. These new standards may significantly change how we practice and especially what is expected of us as mental health providers when evaluating youth for gender affirming medical care. If you work with gender diverse youth or their families it is important to understand these changes and how they may impact your work.

We’re going to talk about…

  • SoC8 Changes in expectations for mental health providers working with youth
  • Adolescent cognitive development and medical decision making
  • An overview of gender development
  • Changes in guidelines for assessment of adolescents
  • An overview of adolescent biopsychosocial assessments
  • The inclusion of multidisciplinary teams and family
  • How to navigate the transition from SoC7 to SoC8 with youth & families
  • Case examples

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the cognitive development necessary for medical decision making in adolescence
  • List the changes in qualifications and requirements for adolescent assessments
  • Describe the necessary content of a biopsychosocial assessment and who should produce it
  • Describe the updated guidelines for working with a multidisciplinary team
  • Explain the updates to the inclusion of parents/family in the assessment of youth

Why this is important?

This Webinar will help mental health providers who work with transgender/gender diverse youth, and those who assess them for medical treatment, navigate the latest changes in the WPATH Standards of Care, version 8 and know how to implement them in your practice and evaluations.

The overall goal of the Standards of Care guidelines is to provide clinical guidance for health professionals to assist transgender and gender diverse people with safe and effective pathways to achieve lasting personal comfort with their gendered selves, and to maximize their overall health, psychological well-being, and self-fulfillment.

Version 8 of the standards of care is a broad expansion of the guidelines, since quite a lot has changed in the world of gender affirming care in the past 11 years since SOC7 was unveiled. For mental health providers who work with transgender and gender diverse youth, especially those who are evaluating them for medical treatment, it is imperative to understand the latest changes.

The webinar is 120 min long.
